At The Hub Of A Dream

At The Hub Of A Dream

The aluminum lawn-chairs are still arced
in their semicircle, addressing closeness.

The slipping ice cubes slowly melt inside
the near-empty pitcher of pink lemonade.

The casual conversation has ended
there is no more talk of Jim and Kathy.

Everyone has sought out the shade at
the picnic table beneath the tall blue oak.

At lawn-center David's fat dog is asleep
warming its bones in the summer sun.

It basks in an old dream as its hind leg
twitches within a field of rabbit-clover.
