Detroit の techno / house というと、Carl Craig や Kevin Saunderson、
Jeff Mills や Derrick May らの第一世代についてはCDも多くリリースされて
いるが、その次の世代となると、まだまだ12"中心。そんな Detroit の
次の世代の techno / house の DJ である Theo Parrish の自分自身のレーベル
Sound Signature のシングルを中心に集めたCDが去年半ばにリリースされて
いたのを、遅れ馳せながら入手したので、紹介。

"Dusty Cabinets" が Matthew Herbert, _Let's All Make Mistakes_
(Tresor, 157, 2000, CD) で使われていたことからある程度予想が付いていたが、
オープニングの "Shadow Dancing" からして、柔らかめのキーボードの音色と
残響が印象的な house 風の音だった。drum の打ち込み音も柔らかめで bpm も低く、
むしろ bass でぐいぐい引っ張るようなノリの曲が多い。

といっても、中でも印象に残ったのは、Africa 風の hand drum の音色と
turntable の scratch 音が掛け合うかのような "Dan Ryan" や、
free drumming ほどではないが変則なリズムを刻む drum programming の
"Dance Of The Drunken Drums" だろう。

bass の太めの音色や African percussion 風の音色使い、それに時折入る
太い声は、funky な印象を与え、ちょっと無機質な感もある Herbert や
Isolee、Losoul といった欧州のDJの音作りとは違うと感じさせるところも。
そこが面白く感じられた。

それほどキャッチのあるポップな曲が無いので全体としては淡い印象だが。
じわじわハマるという感じだろうか。
