1980年前後に Manchester, England から出てきた post-punk なバンド Ludus の
ベスト盤がリリースされた。Ludus は女性歌手 Linder Sterling と guitar 奏者
Ian Pincombe (a.k.a. Ian Devine) のデュオだ。Buzzcocks / Magazine の
Howard Devoto と縁が深かったバンドで、Devoto 在籍時の Buzzcock のレーベル
New Hormones を拠点に活動し、ゲストミュージシャンには Magazine の Dave Formula
の名も見える。また、Sterling は Morrissey (ex-The Smiths) の最も古い友人の
一人であり、彼の写真集 _Morrissey Shot_ も出している。

Ludus の音は、funk や dub の影響も感じるギクシャクした感じの演奏を背景に、
ジェンダーやセクシャリティをテーマにした歌詞を、浮遊するようでちょっと辛辣な
感じの女性歌手が歌うというもので、テンションの高さといい、同世代の post-punk
な男女混成のバンド Au Pairs や Delta 5 との共通点を強く感じるものだ。確かに
Au Pairs ほど強烈な印象を残すバンドではなかったけれども、それほど聴き劣りは
しない。_Nue Au Solail_ の頃になると、同時代の Josef K や Orange Juice の
ようなバンドのポップさに繋がるような曲 ("Let Me Go Where My Pictures Go") や、
ちょっとフェイクなフレンチポップのような曲 ("Nue Au Soleil") も聞かせてくれる。

Delta 5 が Rough Trade や Pre に残した音源がCD再発される気配は無い。
Au Pairs の Cherry Red によるCD再発も廃盤になっている。そんな今、
post-punk 期の女性バンド・男女混成バンドの試みを知る、うってつけの入門盤
といえるかもしれない。

Ian Devine は、その後、Alison Statton (ex-Young Marble Giants,Weekend) と
Devine & Statton 名義で _The Prince Of Wales_ (Les Disques Du Crepuscule,
TWI878-2, 1988, CD) と、_Cardiffians_ (Les Disques Du Crepuscule, TWI906-2,
1990, CD) という2枚のアルバムを残している。ここでは、もはや post-punk 期の
テンションは無いけれども、簡素で微妙な不安定さを残した、少し jazzy で
(_Cardiffians_ では The Lounge Lizards のメンバーも参加している) folk 風の
秀作だ。こちらもお勧めしたい。

ちなみに、この Ludus の再発をした Les Tempes Modernes は、Les Disques Du
Crepuscule や Factory に縁の深いバンドのリリースをしている再発中心の
レーベルだ。今まで、Crispy Ambulance, Josef K, The Names, Section 25,
Stockholm Monsters, Tunnelvision, The Wake といったバンドの音源の再発を
手がけている。今年は、この後、Tuxedomoon 関連の音源の再発が続くようだ。
