1990年代の Massive Attack への参加で注目を浴びるようになった、という感もある
reggae 歌手 Horace Andy の、Coxon Todd (Studio One) の元を離れてフリーランス
として活動をし始め、1970年代後半に USA に移住する前の、1970年代前半の音源の
アンソロジーがリリースされている。Horace Andy の独特の漂うようなちょっと
鼻にかかったような感もあるハイトーンな歌唱が楽しめるだけでなく、46曲中30曲が
Bunny Lee 制作であり、特に後半では1970年代半ばの典型的な King Tubby な音も
楽しめる、お薦めのアンソロジーになっている。

収録は年代順であり、1970-5年の音源を集めたCD1では、Bunny Lee 制作のアルバム
_You Are My Angel_ (1973) から "I'll Forgive You" と "I'm Not A Know It All"
の2曲を除く10曲を収録している。この頃はまだ roots というよりのんびりした
early reggae のノリであり、Bunny Lee 制作の音も dubwise な音ではない。
Horace Andy の歌い方も、力を入れて soul 風に歌う感じになるときもある。
Delroy Wilson のカヴァー "Rain From The Skies" のような曲が特に良い。

しかし、CD1の中で一番の聴き物は、Bunny Lee 制作のものでなく、後に彼の主要な
持ち歌となる "Lonely Woman" (Derrick Harriet (prod.),1972)。カツカツいう
パーカッションの音、ンチャンチャとスカンクするキーボードの音、オフにエコーを
かけられた歌声、と1972年とは思えない dubwize な感じ。ホーンも強くてかっこいい。
他のアンソロジーCDの類にも収録されてこなかった曲ので、嬉しい収録だ。

CD2は1975〜6年の音源を収録しており、それも Bunny Lee 制作がメインとあって、
King Tubby ならではの "flying symbal" という感じの dubwise なトラックが
並んでいる。ガンジャのアンセム "Better Collie" や、女性が歌うかのような
"Nice And Easy" は、version と合わせて収録されている。Studio One 以来の
持歌 "Skylarking" や、John Holt, "A Serious Thing" や Diana Ross,
"Something On My Mind" のカヴァーも収録している。"Money, Money
(The Roots Of All Evil)"、"My Guiding Star" なども、roots reggae らしい
雰囲気を持ついい感じの曲だ。と、Bunny Lee 制作の曲が聴き所なのだが、
Niney The Observer (Winston Holness) 制作による曲も負けていない。
これらも、おそらく King Tubby による音作りだろう。

収録各曲の出版年やプロデューサの情報を載せたり、1970年代のセレクテッド・
ディスコグラフィ (収録された曲のシングルが載っておらず、選択の基準が不明だが)
も載っており、今までの Trojan のアンソロジーに比べて資料的な配慮もされている
ように思う。しかし、シングルの曲はできるだけショーケース形式で (version を
含めて) 収録して欲しかったし、アルバム _You Are My Angel_ からの曲も全て
収録して欲しかったように思う。

_Feel Good All Over: Anthology 1970-1976_ に続く roots reggae 最盛期の
アンソロジーといえば、アルバム _In The Light_ (1977) とその dub 盤の
2 in 1 のCD と、その時期のシングル集 _Good Vibes_ だろう。

この頃の Horace Andy は Hartfield, Conneticut, USA 在住のプロデューサ
Everton DaSilva と出会い協働を始め、ついには自身も Hartfield に移住して
しまった頃だ。そして、この協働の成果としてのアルバムが _In The Light_ だ。
表題曲を含めちょっと可愛らしい曲調と、ファニーな Horace Andy の歌声もあって、
roots にしては妙な明るさも感じるアルバムだ。Augustus Pablo の melodica も
印象的だし、Prince Jammy による dub のミキシングも秀逸だし、聴き所も多い。
dub 盤との2 in 1 CD なので、プログラミングでショーケース形式で再生して
聴けるのも嬉しい。roots 期の Horace Andy のCDを一枚持っておくとしたら、
この _In The Light / In The Light Dub_ だろう。

_Good Vibes_ は _In The Light_ と同時期のシングル音源を集めたもので、
全て version と続けた形で、もしくは discomix 版を収録しているのが嬉しい。
_Feel Good All Over: Anthology 1970-1976_ との重なりは、"A Serious Thing"
と "Skylarking" の2曲だけだ。それも、こちらは version 付きで収録している。
DaSilva のレーベル Hungry Town や、Hartfield での Horace Andy 自身のレーベル
Rhythm レーベルからのシングルからの曲 (6,8,9,10曲目) は、_In The Light_ の
アウトテイクという感じで楽しめる。Bunny Lee 制作の "Pure Ranking" の
discomix 版も嬉しい。シングル集ということもあるのか、_In The Light_ の曲より
キャッチのある歌が多いよう感じられ、捨て曲なし。_In The Light_ に続けて
聴くことをお薦めしたい CD だ。
