'70s の Black Ark studio 時代の Lee Perry の決定版ともいえるアンソロジーが
Island Jamaica から出た。

後に punk 以降の rock や様々な dance music に影響を与えた dub という手法は、
'60s末に発明され'70sに発展をとげたのだが、Lee Perry はその主要な革新者だった。
もう一人の dub 革新者 King Tubby が音の抜きが巧いのに対し、Lee Perry は
むしろ音の重ねによる混沌とした音空間作りが巧い、というのが対象的だった。
そして、そんな Lee Perry の過激さを支えたのが Black Ark studio だった。

一方、Lee Perry は dub という音作りだけでなく、プロデューサとして多くの
名曲を制作している。特に、この Black Ark studio 時代には Max Romeo,
"War In A Babylon" や Junior Murvin, "Police And Thieves" といった名曲が多い。

そして、こういった名曲や dub の名作はのいくつかは、Island からのリリースに
よって広く知られる曲になったのだが。

そういう dub のアーティストとして、名曲のプロデューサとして、最もノッていた
'70s 後半の Black Ark studio 時代の Lee Perry を概覧するのにうってつけなのが、
このIsland Jamaica からリリースされたCD 3枚組だ。

かつて Trojan で、そして、今は Blood & Fire の一連の再発で丁寧な調査編集の
仕事をしてきている Steve Barrow と、David Katz、Island の Trevor Wyatt に
よって、編集されている。Island に残した有名曲はほぼ収録されている。音は
マスターテープから起こしているようだが、たまにノイズが乗るものがある。
52ページにわたるぶ厚いブックレットは、Intro による凝ったデザインで、当時の
写真やジャケットやレーベルその他の資料が楽しめる。'80年に Paul McCartney が
日本のマリファナ所持で逮捕されたときに Lee Perry が日本の法務省に当てた
手紙の写真、なんてものもあって、内容が笑える。ううむ。パッケージは CDS
ケースに入った CD 3枚とブックレットが紙の箱 (ちょっと安っぽい) に納められた
というもので、デザインは Intro。Steve Barrow の編集に Intro のデザインの
組み合わせは、Trojan 〜 Blood & Fire の '70s の roots reggae の一連の
リイシューに連なるものともいえるだろう。

Black Ark 期のCDによるアンソロジーには、他にも'85年の Lee Scratch Perry,
_Reggae Greats_ (Island / Mango, '85, CD) がある。Island で制作した名曲
10曲を、コンパクトに廉価CD1枚にまとめたもの。有名曲ばかりでとりあえずの入門
にはいいのだが、レアトラック等はない。dub も収録されてはいない。同じ Island
音源中心の編集ということで、曲に重なりが多いが、_Arkology_ から漏れた
収録曲もある。Island に残した Lee Perry 制作のアルバムでCD化されて今でも
入手容易なのは以下のとおり。気に入ったシンガーやDJのアルバムを聴いてみる
のもいいだろう。

Lee Scratch Perry & Friends, _Open The Gate_ (Trojan, CDPRY2, '89, 2CD) と
The Uspesseters with Lee Perry & Friends, _Build The Ark_ (Trojan, CDPRY3,
'90, 2CD) とは、_Arkology_ との曲の重なりは1曲のみ。A面と version を連ねた
ショーケース形式で編集されたこの2組は、7"からの盤おこしでトレースノイズが
聞こえるが、特に _Open The Gate_ は名曲が多いので、_Arkology_ で Lee Perry に
興味を持ったなら、お勧め。他にもこの頃の Lee Perry 制作曲のアンソロジーは
玉石さまざまなものがあるが、Blood & Fire と並ぶリイシューレーベルによる
Lee Perry, _Voodooism_ (Pressure Sound, PSCD009, '96, CD) もお勧め。もちろん、
_Arkology_ との重なりはない。
