The On-U Sound Master Recording シリーズということで、On-U Sound の80年代
初頭の録音のCD化が行われている。16タイトルが予定されているが、今までに
出回っている分をみると、多くは CD Plus 仕様である。ただし、データ部分は
共有のようで、Windows / Mac に対応の On-U Sound のカタログとなっている。

今までに買った中から、お勧めのものを。

African Head Charge や Creation Rebel のメンバーを中心とする80年代初頭の
セッション。この頃の On-U Sound は、Cherry Red レーベル経由でリリースして
いたのだが、この The Missing Brazilians は、Cherry Red が敬遠したために
リリースが遅れて、結局 Cherry Red を経由せずにリリースされたという曰くの
あるアルバムである。ただ、Cherry Red 時代の On-U Sound というと、Playgroup
のような free jazz / funk と dub の混交を目指した実験的な作品もあるので、
この _Warzone_ が敬遠されたのも意外な気がする。

実際に聴くと、確かに80s初頭の On-U Sound の中でもズタズタバラバラな感じが
強い作品ではあるのだが、Mark Stewart with Mafia のような荒涼とした感じは
Annie Anxiety の歌をフィーチャーした2曲目 "Gentle Killers" くらいか。むしろ
間の開き方が絶妙な抽象的な音という感じ。

ちなみに、Massive Attack, _Blue Lines_ (Wild Bunch, WBRCD1, '90, CD) に
フィーチャーされていた女性歌手 Shara Nelson が5曲目 "Savanna Prance" で
フィーチャーされている。

さて、On-U Sound には 10" Discoplate という、10" single のシリーズが
あるのだが、そのシリーズの初期の作品を収録した CD が出ている。

10" Discoplate シリーズの第一弾である Prince Far I と Bim Sharman の
カップリング盤も収録されている。On-U Sound の一面でもある Mark Stewart
with Mafia や New Age Steppers のような post-punk 的な音とは対極的な、
roots reggae レーベルとしての On-U Sound の音が楽しめるCDになっている。
Various Artists, _Reggae Archive Volume 1_ (On-U Sound, On-U CD21) が
気にいっていた人なら、きっと気に入るだろう。もっと音はクリアだけれども。

ちなみに、この 10" Discoplate シリーズは、第二集も計画されている。
そちらも楽しみだ。
