70年代前半の Jamaica の roots reggae シーンで活躍したプロデューサ Clive Chin
(スタジオは Randy's 、レーベルは Impact 。) の仕事を概観できるCDが、UKの
roots reggae 専門リイシュー・レーベル Pressure Sound と Blood And Fire から、
続けてリリースされた。いい機会と思ってまとめて聴いたら、かなり良かったので、
紹介したい。

_Randy's - 17 North Parade_ は歌もの中心で、dub / version が2曲、DJ ものが
1曲 (Delroy "Crutches" Jones, "My Guiding Star" が Jah Stitch の DJ 入り)。
一方の Impact All Stars, _Forward The Bass - Dub From Randy's 1972-1975_ は
dub 盤で、ちょうど補完するような編集になっている。前者の収録曲の dub が
後者の収録曲になっていたりするものもある。

このCDを聴くまで Randy's や Clive Chin についてほとんど知らなかったのだが、
後に Joe Gibbs の所で活躍する Errol Thompson が engineer をやっていた所だと
いうことを知った。というか、Errol Thompson を Joe Gibbs に引き抜かれて、
Randy's は終わったらしい。

Joe Gibbs / Errol Thompson のプロダクションは、70s 後半の roots reggae の中で、
最もポップな音作り (Dennis Brown, _Visions_ や Culture, _Two Seven Clash_) を
する一方で、Mighty Two 名義で _African Dub_ シリーズという強力な dub を残して
いるわけだけれど、その片鱗というか、その原点とでもいう音を、この2枚のCDに
聴くことができる。演奏の Impact All Stars (Randy's All Stars) は、Aston &
Carlton Barrett がリズム隊の The Wailers Band とほぼ同じ面子だ。

特に器材のせいもあるのか素朴な感じもあるが、trombone や melodica のフレーズも
印象的な、親しみやすい roots reggae チューンを、この Clive Chin の
プロダクションに楽しむことができる。
