再発CDで聴く70年代後半の Bunny Lee シリーズ、第二弾。

70年代半ば、Bunny Lee prod. を代表する歌手が Johnny Clarke だ。その、
75年から76年にかけて Attack からリリースされたシングルを集めた編集盤が、
このCDだ。もちろん、Steve Barrow 編集、Intro デザインという、いまや
Blood And Fire レーベルで大活躍のコンビによる、その先駆けともいえる
編集盤でもある。

Johnny Clarke のあまり癖の無い柔らかい歌声も、The Aggrovators のしっかり
した演奏とすっきりした音処理にはまっている。"Rock With Me Baby" のような
ラヴ・ソングが Johnny Clarke には似合うのかなぁ、と思うこともあるのだが、
優しく歌われる "Too Much War" のようなコンシャスな歌もいいなぁ、と思う
ところがある。

このシングル集の dub / version だけを集めた編集盤も、御揃いのジャケットで
同時にリリースされている。

Bunny Lee prod. といえば、King Tubby。いうことで、最後の一曲は弟子の
Prince Jammy によるものだが、70s半ばの The Aggrovators 演奏の King Tubby
流の重く締まった dub が楽しめるアルバムになっている。U Roy をはじめ
Bunny Lee 界隈の DJ が使っているトラックも多い。

曲順は Johnny Clarke, _Don't Trable Trouble_ そのまま、その version が
収録されているし、ジャケットも御揃いなので、2枚揃えておくのをお勧めしたい。
自分で showcase 形式でプレイしたりするのも楽しいだろう。

_Don't Trouble Trouble_ とほぼ同時期、Virgin からリリースされた2枚の
アルバムを編集したのがこのCDだ。制作はもちろん、Bunny Lee。ミュージシャンの
クレジットは The Aggrovators ではないが、実質的にそのメンバーによるものだ。

このCDの特徴は、The Abyssinians ("Satta-Amasa-Gana", "Declaration Of Rights")、
Burning Spear ("Ites Green And Gold")、Bob Marley ("I'm Still Waiting",
"Crazy Baldhead", "Simmer Down")、Peter Tosh ("Legalise It")、Alton Ellis
("Cry Tough") 、"M.P.L.A." として有名な Little Richard, "Freedom Blues" など、
有名な reggae の曲が収録されていることだ。聴きなれたメロディのポップな曲が
多く収録されているということで、初心者でも楽しめるだろう。

_Don't Trouble Trouble_ とその dub 盤 _Johnny In The Echo Chamber_ の方が、
Johnny Clarke の歌と King Tubby の音作りそのものの魅力を聴くことができる
ように思う。しかし、有名な "Satta-Amasa-Gana" にしても他のカヴァー曲にしても、
この Johnny Clarke のCDで使われている The Aggrovators の演奏が、 King Tubby
がらみの多くの dub や DJ のトラックで使われており、元の歌が収録されている、
という意味でも、ぜひ聴いておきたい作品だ。
